Social Responsibility & Sustainable Development Office

About: The Chinese University of Hong Kong is in the process of developing the Strategic Plan 2021–2025. As a socially responsible institution of higher education committed to sustainable development, university social responsibility (USR) is at the core of CUHK’s next five-year vision. In the new Strategic Plan, we articulate our USR values and priorities and connect them to sustainable development. We are committed to translating USR into action to make a difference.
To this end, the University establishes the Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development Office (SRSDO) to advise senior management on key areas of USR and to execute, evaluate and enhance the USR action initiatives outlined in the Strategic Plan. The new office is composed of four sections including:
1. Sustainable Development Section
– Responsible for on-campus and inter-institutional sustainable development matters.
2. Smart Campus Section
– Managing the smart campus initiative and space planning.
3. Climate Action Section
– The outreach arm of the University’s sustainable development and climate action function and the manager of the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change.
4. Global Communications Section
– Responsible for liaison with CUHK’s global partners in USR and sustainable development and serving as the secretariat of SDSN Hong Kong.

Global Policy Impact and Social Mission Subgroup

About: CUHK is committed to supporting link-building and collaborations between the CUHK community and non-governmental sectors to address issues of global/local relevance and importance. Various Faculties, Departments, Colleges and units have established and engaged students in community service programmes to make a positive difference in society.
Established in 2013, the Global Policy Impact and Social Mission Subgroup endeavours to strengthen and coordinate efforts in students’ involvement in social programmes among different organizing units in CUHK, and to connect CUHK’s research to impact on international policy-making agencies with a view to bettering the world.

Institute of Future Cities

About: Overarching Vision
To develop the IOFC into an Institute of excellence, a leading multi-disciplinary research Institute in Asia with significant impacts on academic research and urban theories and practices including policy, plans and design especially in Hong Kong, mainland China and Asia. It will also play a key networking role between the international urban research communities and the Chinese ones in Asia.

Three inter-related sets of more specific missions are identified as follows:
A Multidisciplinary Research Hub
The Institute will be a multidisciplinary research platform to facilitate innovative, collaborative and/or comparative research work and to serve as a learning site on research methodologies and consultation approaches in Hong Kong, the Pearl River Delta and beyond.
A Teaching and Learning Platform
The Institute will serve as a learning and training platform for students, interns or even professionals in Hong Kong and mainland China, to nurture them to think BIG from multidisciplinary perspectives with both local/regional/national knowledge and global outlook.
A Knowledge Transfer Centre
Members of the Institute will offer advice and influence government policymaking through solid and evidence-based research work. It will also serve as a social learning centre to educate citizens and empower communities through theoretical and practical research innovation.

Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response

About: Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC) has been established by the joint effort of Oxford University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong as a non-profit research centre to carry out research, training and community knowledge transfer in the area of disaster and medical humanitarian response in Greater China and the Asia-Pacific Region since April 2011.
CCOUC aims to minimise the negative health impact of disasters experienced by vulnerable populations in the region by serving as a platform for research, education, and community knowledge transfer in the areas of disaster and medical humanitarian crisis policy development, planning, and response. The goal of CCOUC is to be the leading research and academic training centre of the Asia-Pacific Region in these areas.
The Centre has participated in the World Health Organization (WHO)’s consultation meeting on disaster health risk management and established international cooperation with leading institutions in the field, including the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) in Belgium, and Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and FXB Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University.

Institute of Environment, Energy and Sustainability, CUHK

About: The Institute of Environment, Energy and Sustainability (IEES), established in 2011, aims to promote multidisciplinary environmental research and education for The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Centre for Youth Studies

About: The Centre for Youth Studies aims to coordinate and synthesize research efforts in different approaches to youth studies, including youth identity, youth policy, youth health, political participation of youth and social psychology of youth, to name a few.
When policy makers are facing the challenging task of formulating public policies to cope with the changing youth scene in Hong Kong, the Centre strives to serve the society as a platform to disseminate knowledge and research data for public policy making and evaluation, and to offer answers to various youth issues, from political participation to social policy related to youth.

The specific objectives of the Centre include:
(1) To promote interdisciplinary and collaborative youth studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and to develop youth studies research as a strategic focus in the social science related disciplines;
(2) To set up a platform for external collaboration with overseas academic institutions on youth studies and comparative youth research; and
(3) To generate impactful policy implications for youth in Hong Kong and the region.

Specific Research Lines:
The Centre draws on the existing expertise of the members to streamline research into six areas:
(1) Social exclusion, delinquency, transition, mobility, employment and youth empowerment
(2) Youth Citizenship, Online Mobilization and Political Participation
(3) Social Psychology of Youth and Family
(4) Subculture, Social Media Use, Cultural and Media Consumption
(5) Youth’s Physical and Psychological Health
(6) Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship among Youngsters

Sustainable Communities Lab For People's Multifaced Well-being - Workshop IV

Topic: Place audit, urban planning procedures and realising placemaking projects

Place audit is a tool for us to gain a multi-faceted overview of our neighbourhood. After conducting a place audit, we will be able to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in a place. On the other hand, familiarisation with the existing planning system can help us formulate suitable strategies for proposing and realising community planning and placemaking projects.

Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development Office ─ UNIfy: Sustainable Living # NewNormal Edition

The pandemic and the new normal have inspired new ways of living and reflection about the relationship between people and nature.
Pivoting on the notion of living sustainably in the new normal situation, the joint university sustainability campaign ‘UNIfy’ is back this March with a series of themed online experiences and events: mind body soul, channelling your inner self through meditation and exercises; environmental psychology , deciphering our daily decision-making and behaviour; Agriculture, connecting with our local farmers and telling stories of the land, city and food; and waste reduction, exploring the possibilities of recycling with smart features.

SDG Law Firm

Introducing SDG Law Firm: A New Animated Series on Sustainable Development Goals

We are pleased to announce the release of SDG Law Firm, the first animated story series in Cantonese (with English subtitle), to introduce the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Set in Hong Kong, the series begins with a law intern who joins the SDG Law Firm, highlighting various social, environmental, and economic challenges through the interactions of colleagues and the handling of legal cases.

This original work has been collaboratively created by 21 CUHKers including students, faculty, staff, and alumni who contributed to screenwriting, directing, illustrating, voice acting, and production.
