New University General Education Course in Area A
UGEA2288 Understanding China: Tradition and Modernity

Course Description

This course aims to provide a concise introduction to the rich and complex history of China, and how this historical heritage finds manifestation in the lives and thoughts of Chinese people today. Modelled upon and enriching UGCP1001 Understanding China, the course will focus on five themes: intellectual foundations, historical epochs, modernisation, economic development, and science and technology. It will explore the link between tradition and modernity for each theme, drawing on selected works on China from philosophy, history, sociology, economics, and science. Students will be introduced to major events, interpretations, and perspectives pertaining to China’s transformations in the past and present, and will be guided to reflect on contemporary developments in China through lectures, readings, and exploratory projects.
