General Education
The RCGE co-sponsored the Idea of University and General Education academic conference with Chung Chi College on 19-20 January, 2007. With the ever growing specialization in modern academia, although recognition of the importance of general education is gradually increasing, the importance of the idea of university is, on the contrary, weakening. However, how general education is implemented usually reflects the school authorities’ idea of university. Accordingly, the conference reiterated the connection between the idea of university and general education, giving it true significance for the age. The themes of the conference included General Education in Chinese Societies, the University General Education Experience in Mainland China, Philosophy and Practice of General Education and General Education, Society and the Idea of University: China and the West.

The symposium was the fourth in a series of 12 symposia organized by the Heads of Universities Committee in preparation for the transition to the new “3+3+4” curriculum. The event, hosted by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, was closely timed with two other events on related themes, namely Core Curriculum hosted by the University of Hong Kong and the Lingnan University on 12 May and Cultural Education & History hosted by the Hong Kong Baptist University on 5 June.
Keynote speakers gave presentations on the development and trends of the General Education programme in the U.S.A., Mainland China and Hong Kong.
The symposium also provided a forum for academics and administrators of the UGC-funded universities to share their latest plans for the new 4-year curriculum and to discuss the major issues that were important to the development and management of the General Education and Core curriculum in 2012, including:
- management of curriculum change
- content, pedagogy and assessment
- faculty and course development
- funding and resource

香港中文大學大學通識教育部與香港中文大學社會工作學系於2004年3月25至27日成功舉辦了為期三天的「苦與樂」研討會。大學邀請副校長兼研究院院長楊綱凱教授、大學通識教育主任張燦輝教授，以及社會工作學系系主任鄧廣良教授致歡迎辭。
會議首兩天分為八個環節進行專題討論，第三天為「在痛苦中成長：社會服務的啟示」圓桌會議。在三天的會議中，我們喜見來自本地不同院校、不同學系的學者，及社會服務界的社會工作者聚首一堂，發表他們對課題的真知灼見，從哲學、宗教、文化、社會工作、社會學、人類學、心理學、精神分析學等跨學科的角度，就人生的苦樂問題進行交流討論。是次研討會吸引了很多學者、學生及社會福利界同工出席聆聽，他們在公開論壇積極參與，提出不同的角度與意見，增加討論的闊度與深度，在一片熱烈的討論中為大會增添異彩。

In celebration of the establishment of the RCGE, the Office of University General Education of the Chinese University of Hong Kong sponsored the “Humanity in the Sciences and Science in the Humanities” academic and pedagogical conference on 2-4 June, 2005, which explored the commonalities in different intellectual fields and exchanged ideas on how to construct and teach general education courses within the bounds of Nature, Science, Technology and Environment so as to demonstrate humanitarian concern in scientific research.
