Part I: Inheritance and Innovation: Design of a New ‘Service Learning’ Programme at United College
United College is launching a series of newly designed “Service Learning” courses that align with a new initiative set forth by the University. Through incorporation of service-learning components into our College General Education programme, we aim to integrate the University’s goals with the motto of our College, “Ming De Xin Min” (明德新民) (“cultivating virtue and renewing the people”), and thereby developing a general education curriculum that embodies the unique characteristics of United College. In this talk, I will give an overview on design of these new “Service Learning” courses at United College, and highlight the transitions between the old and new general education programmes. The new College General Education programme inherited our College’s spirit of preserving tradition while making progress to face current challenges of contemporary society.
Part II: Whole Person Education at Shaw College
The General Education at Shaw College embodies the college’s motto, “Learning, Innovation, and Benefitting Humankind,” by fostering whole-person development in intellectual, emotional, cultural, and societal dimensions. In this presentation, I will outline how the diverse courses and activities within Shaw College’s General Education program promote interdisciplinary learning, critical thinking, and social responsibility. These initiatives encourage students to engage in both academic inquiry and community service, nurturing personal growth and a commitment to positively impacting society, fully reflecting the holistic educational values of the college.
