Part I: Fostering Holistic Development Through Service-Learning: A Case Study of Chung Chi College

Chung Chi College’s Service-Learning Programme epitomizes the transformative potential of service-learning. With a profound commitment to community engagement and holistic education, the programme stands as a beacon of experiential learning excellence. Embracing the ethos of service-learning, students are immersed in a dynamic environment that fosters empathy, critical thinking, and civic responsibility. Through hands-on experiences both on campus and within the broader community, students engage in meaningful projects that bridge theory with practice, cultivating a deep understanding of social issues and sustainable development.

Aligned with the cutting-edge principles of service-learning, the programme at Chung Chi College goes beyond traditional pedagogy, emphasizing active participation, reflection, and reciprocity. By tackling real-world challenges and contributing to the common good, students not only enhance their academic knowledge but also develop essential skills in leadership, collaboration, and social responsibility. This immersive educational experience nurtures personal growth, enriches students’ lives, and fosters a culture of service that transcends individual achievement to create lasting impact in the community.

Part II: The Integral Connection between Chinese Culture and Whole-person Education

Chinese culture is a signature component of the General Education curriculum of New Asia College. In this talk, I will introduce how the cultivation of the intellectual and artistic traditions of Chinese culture constitutes the content and values of collegial general education and serves the purpose of whole-person development. By promoting a culture of practice, our service-learning programs also incorporate day-to-day experience and diverse cultures, with Chinese culture as a core, to prepare our students for civic engagement.
