About the Award

Ever since the founding of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), General Education (GE) has been a key part of the undergraduate curriculum which aims at nurturing students as educated persons with the intellect and inclination to appreciate broad issues concerning humanity and modern society.

Over two hundred teachers offer GE courses at CUHK, all of whom are dedicated and many, outstanding. In recognition of their contributions, the Senate Committee on General Education (SCGE) resolved in 2006 to launch the Exemplary Teaching Award in General Education. The Award is presented annually by the SCGE to normally up to four teachers in recognition of their exemplary contribution to teaching and learning in GE.

The nominations are reviewed by the SCGE and its Standing Committee based on the course design, teaching and learning effectiveness, tutelage and Course and Teaching Evaluation results of the GE courses they offered in the past two academic years. Contribution to teaching and learning are evaluated against the following objectives of GE Programme and expectations of GE courses:

Objectives of GE Programme:

  • To furnish students with a broad intellectual perspective, and instill in them an understanding of the values of different academic disciplines and the connections between different fields of knowledge.
  • To engage students in active reflections on perennial issues, prompting them to make connections between intellectual pursuits and life at work, at home and in the community.
  • To promote an understanding of Chinese cultural heritage and other cultural traditions.
  • To develop the attitudes and skills that are conducive to critical thinking, the ability to deal with unfamiliar questions, self-expression and communication with others.
  • To extend students’ curiosity, promote a habit of reading widely, and develop attitudes and competence as independent learners and team players.

Expectations of GE courses:

GE courses should be at the same intellectual level as major courses, and should carry the same workload as major courses with the same number of units.
